The Mandrake is a plant that grows wild in southern Europe and Asia.

The Mandrake has a very large,thick root.

Sometimes this root divides itself in two,looking somewhat like a human being.

This has given rise to many superstitious beliefs about the plant.

The plant contains chemical compounds that may be used as medicines or poisons.

Ancient peoples of the Near East and Europe used the root of the plant in medicine to cause sleep or kill pain.

Some people thought mandrakes were magical plants and used them to make a person fall in love or

 help people to produce more children.

Mandrakes are mentioned in the Bible.

Genesis tells us that Rachel,who wanted very much to have a child,agreed to exchange with

 her sister Leah an opportunity to sleep with their husband Jacob for some mandrakes.

Today,some peasants in Europe may still use the pant’s root in drinks,

and believe  the drinks have magical effects.

Some people believed that anybody who tried to pull the mandrake from the earth would die.

so people used to fix one end of a rope to the root of the plant,and the other end round a dog’s neck,

and then drive the dog.

It is said that when the plant was pulled out,the dog died.
